Back On My Soapbox

Okay...I'm about to get back up on my soapbox. I'm normally pretty quite and don't speak my mind about certain issues. I tend to keep my opinions to myself unless someone asks. I'm talking publicly here (privately is a different story...as Paul is reading this going, "What?!). There is just one issue out there right now that I feel I must talk about. I'm sure you all have been following the story of the indictment of Michael Vick, quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons, on charges of being involved in a multi-state dogfighting operation. Apparently, on Monday, Vick pleaded guilty and issued a public "apology" to his fans, teammates, and the NFL. Listen to some of the things he said...

"What I did was immature and I need to grow up."

"I'm more disappointed in myself more than anything for all the young kids
out there who looked at Michael Vick as a role model."

"Dogfighting is a terrible thing and I reject it."

And my personal favorite...

when asking for "forgiveness and understanding" he would
"turn my life over to God. That's the right thing to do right now."

Yeah...okay. Is he taking lessons from Paris Hilton? What is it with celebrities "turning to God" when they find themselves in trouble?? Unbelievable! Kudos to the NFL for suspending him indefinitely without pay! I had an issue back before the season started when they didn't allow him to attend training camp but he still received his salary. What's the point of that?

Anyway...what really sent me over the edge was a blog post by Wayne Pacelle, the CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, on his personal blog, A Humane Nation. I read Wayne's blog every day and follow closely many of the issues he discusses. Something that he said in his post Monday really set me off. I had just come upstairs after discussing Vick's "apology" with Paul and telling him how the Humane Society is all over this issue. Then I signed on and read the following statement on Wayne's blog in his post "Apology From a Fallen Star:"

"I felt real sympathy for Vick in watching him speak. I saw a man whose life has been turned upside down. No one can feel good about seeing someone take this kind of fall. It's tragic."

You have GOT to be KIDDING me??! How can he feel sorry for this man who just admitted to being involved in killing 8 dogs who were deemed no longer good for fighting in ways such as electrocution, drowning, and hanging??! I instantly shot back a comment letting him know just how I feel about his feelings of sympathy for Vick. I figured that there would probably be so many comments that mine wouldn't even be seen. However, tonight as I sat here reading my favorite blogs, I was pleasantly surprised to see that my comment was one of few that actually made it on to his post for today (Talk Back:A Plea For the Animals)!!

So...in the course of a couple of days I have gone from keeping my comments to myself to telling the world! This is, however, an issue I feel strongly about. As you will see by reading some of the other comments that I'm not alone in my thinking. There were many good points made. If you have time, swing by and read some of the comments.

Okay...I'm getting down off my soapbox now. I have just one more thing for you tonight...a cartoon emailed to me by Paul's aunt titled "Vick On Trial." This is too cute!

New Stamp

I signed up for another swap today, this one using one of the "Happy Hoppers" stamps, a line of bunny images from the makers of the House Mouse stamps. There was only one problem...I don't own any Happy Hoppers stamps! I've been admiring them at Hobby Lobby for a while. As a matter of fact, I was looking at them just yesterday. Well, I happen to know that Hobby Lobby has a 40% coupon on their website this week, so I returned to Hobby Lobby today and took care of this little minor issue keeping me from completing this swap. They had quite a few to choose from, so I must have stood there for 10 minutes trying to figure out which one I wanted. I finally settled on this little fella...

Isn't he sweet?! Makes me want some watermelon! I think I like the Happy Hoppers better than the House Mouse images. Of course, I like bunnies more than mice...so there ya go. This isn't my swap card. I just put this together to see how the little guy would look on paper. I used Sketch Challenge 138 on SCS for the layout.

Oh, and look at this paper I bought at Michaels today (hey...Michael's and Hobby Lobby are right across the street from each other, so it only made sense to go to both). It's gorgeous! This is probably the prettiest paper I've ever seen. The first picture is straight on. The second picture is tilted slightly so you can see the gold running through it. These pictures don't even begin to do this paper justice.

It's so delicate too. The sticker on the back says "Florentine - Venetian 12x12." Apparently, it's made in Italy. It really hurts me to pay $1 a sheet for one sheet of paper and I usually only ever buy printed paper when it's 4 for $1, but I couldn't pass this up. I have no idea what I'm going to do with it. I don't even want to cut it...it's so pretty. Maybe I should just frame it or something. (Only my fellow paper-crafters will understand this and won't think I've completely lost my mind!)

Halloween...and Scattergories

Today's Ways To Use It challenge on Splitcoast was to make a Halloween card! I thought why not...I can spend a few minutes tonight thinking of October 31st. Maybe by then it will be COOLER and NOT RAINING!

Actually, Halloween will be here before we know it. Where has this year gone?! I was in Hobby Lobby today and they actually had all their Christmas stuff out! What's up with that?!

Blogger Scattergories

I love the game Scattergories, so when I saw this game going around the blog world, I knew I had to play! I'm not very good at the real game because I can't think under pressure, and that loud ticking timer is enough to drive you crazy!

Rain, Rain Go Away...

Ugh! When will it stop?! Look at this forecast:

Tonight: Rain
Tomorrow Morning: Rain
Tomorrow Noon: Rain
Tomorrow Evening: Rain
Friday: Rain

This is ridiculous! I don't know how much more the Midwest can take. On the morning of August 7th, approximately 7 inches of rain fell on the city. Remember my post from last year around Labor Day? Well, it happened again. All those people whose homes were flooded last time had just finished getting their lives back in order, and because the city did nothing but talk about the problem...the same thing happened again; however, this time it was worse and most of the people who didn't have their homes condemned last time had it happen this time.
It's not just us, though. I'm sure you've all read the news about the floods in Northern Ohio today due to two storm systems colliding. What is going on with this weather?! Really makes you wonder, doesn't it.

Anyway, I had a little free time tonight, so I wanted to make a card. I was going through some House Mouse images that I received in an image swap, and I found this one. I thought it was cute and fit perfectly with the whole subject of rain. I didn't really have a sentiment to fit, so I searched the net and found this quote by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, "The best thing one can do when it's raining is to let it rain." It thought it fit!

Stay dry everyone!

The Miracle of Friendship

Approximately August 22, 1980. ..27 years ago today. That is a wild guess. I was 11 years old and it was the first day of 6th grade...my first day of middle school. I remember sitting all by myself on the bleachers in the gym. I think it was gym class, but I'm getting older so the exact details are starting to fade. It seems as though everyone knows everyone else. I'm shy. I feel like I don't know anybody. I switched schools in the middle of 2nd grade, and because I was so shy, I never really formed any strong childhood friendships. One girl approaches. She tells me she remembers me from kindergarten. Seriously? I'm only 11 years old and already my memory is shot because I don't remember her. However, I was painfully shy even back in kindergarten.

Who knows if it was actually August 22nd. That's just the day we picked to celebrate. On that day so long ago, me and the girl who remembered me from kindergarten became best friends 4-ever.

Even though we don't see each other nearly as often as we should (even though we still live in the same town) we both know without out a doubt that we would be there for each other on a moment's notice.

Happy 27th Friendship Anniversary, Sheila! I love ya like a sister!

The Miracle of Friendship

There's a miracle called friendship
That dwells within the heart,
And you don't know how it happens
Or how it gets its start...
But the happiness it brings you
Always gives a special lift,
And you realize that friendship
Is God's most precious gift!

CTMH Swap

This past week I received back two of the last four swaps I participated in, so I thought I'd show you one of them tonight because I ran out of time to make a card. We rented a couple of movies this weekend instead of waiting for them through Netflix, and we watched one of them tonight. Wild Hogs with John Travolta, Tim Allen, Martin Lawrence, and William H. Macy. Funny movie! Goofy but hilarious! Last night we watched Disturbia! Very intense! David Morse makes such a great creepy serial killer guy! Some of you might know him as the guy who played the cop that was out to get Dr. House on House. Great actor!

Anyway, these are the cards from the CTMH 3x3 swap I was in. Everyone did a great job!

Now lets see if I can identify who did what. This isn't going to be easy because, believe it or not, many people don't sign the back of the cards that they make for swaps (or RAKs for that matter).

Okay...from left to right starting at the top...
  • *signed on back with initials LLM*
  • ?
  • ?
  • Kate (gmcbunny)
  • ?
  • My card
This was a lot harder than I thought it would be! It seems as though the rest of them either don't have a SCS gallery or don't upload pictures of their swaps to their gallery. Well, the mystery cards belong to the following: Lisa (lisacox1980), Lindsay (chaikitty), Lori (lorilaw), and Heather (heebee). If one of you happens to surf by here, let me know and I'll replace your question mark with your name. I want to give credit where credit is due!

I only have one thing to say...Sign your work, people!!

Animal Week Finale

Well, friends, "Animal Week" has officially concluded. For my last card, I thought I would use one of my favorite stamps. I've told you before how much I love this image, and it's one of the newest to my collection. It's so sweet! Because I'm going to have a hard time coloring this bird any other color besides blue, I turned to my blue scrap folder to see what I could find.

Hey look...no Cuttlebug on this one. I thought I'd give ya'll a break. I did take help where I could with this one, though, and used another sketch challenge, this an old one from Trudy's Treasures. I just stumbled across Trudy's blog a few days ago, and she has some great sketches! It seems that she's also a fellow TAC Angel.

I'd like to say thanks to Gail at A Dragonfly Garden for instituting "Animal Week." It was a lot of fun! I really enjoyed working with all my animal stamps and seeing what I could come up with. Can you believe she got me to post every day?!

I'll leave you tonight with one of my absolute favorite pictures of all time. I'm sure you have seen it before. It's "The Mad Bluebird" by wildlife photographer Michael L. Smith.

Hee hee Hee! I just LOVE this. There is a great story behind this picture that can be read here. I'm seriously thinking about getting a print of this picture to hang in my kitchen because it makes me smile so much. Besides, it would fit in with my birdhouses!

Mint Chicken

Yuck. I'm going to say it right now...I hate the color mint green. I think Mint Melody is the worst Stampin' Up color ever in the history of Stampin' Up colors, and I'm so glad they retired it. I was thumbing through my green scrap pile looking for papers to use for my 6th card for "Animal Week," and I came across a strip of Mint Melody. If I hate the color so much, you're probably wondering how I ended up with some of it. I found some along with the ink at a garage sale a few years ago (of course). Anyway, I thought to myself that I'm going to use up this little strip once and for all so I don't have to look at it anymore.

I really, really struggled with this card. I thought maybe if I Cuttlebugged the mint, I might like it better. Nope...still hate it.

I don't know what it is about this color. I think it all goes back to when I was 15 years old and dad was heading out to buy me a car for my 16th birthday. Back then, dad had a penchant for green cars. It seemed like every car he bought was green. I remember their green station wagon and his green truck. His motorcycle was even green. The type of car he came home with didn't matter to me in the least, but being a 15-year-old girl, I wanted to have a say in the color of the car I was going to be seen driving in. I told him on his way out to please not come home with a green car.

What was I thinking?! I should have known that that alone would cause him to go looking specifically for a green car. Oh, but he didn't come home with just any green car. No...it was a 1978 MINT GREEN Mercury Bobcat. Mint green!!! No one can tell me that he didn't do that on purpose! I can only imagine the twinkle in his eye when he found this little green gem.

When he came home with it, I (being the good daughter that I am ) didn't complain about the color. I knew better! I was lucky enough to be getting a car. All I remember is smiling and saying, "It's green," and he just grinned. Here is a picture of my mint green car that I aptly named Bobby. Bobby the Bobcat.

This picture doesn't even begin to show how bright of a mint color this really was. I think I drove this thing for about 4 years until I traded it in for a Black Ford Festiva. I was so proud of this little car. I wonder what ever happened to Bobby.

Sweet Kitty

Here is my fifth card for Gail's "Animal Week" challenge at A Dragonfly Garden. I combined this with Beate's Weekend Sketch Challenge #15 over at her blog, Fresh & Fun. I really need to play along with Beate's sketch challenges more often because her sketches are always wonderful.

I'm trying to use some of the animal stamps that I don't use very much. I found this sweet little kitty cat for a $1 at a used stamp sale a few years ago. Doing this challenge, however, has made me realize that I am definitely in need of more animal stamps! Seriously!

For some reason, in this picture the cat looks pink. Just so you know...it's not...it's gray with a soft shimmery pink background. Looks much better in real life...believe me. LOL. I didn't mean for the phrase "believe me" to show up either. I think the "me" is part of the word "memories." This is such pretty paper. I love CTMH's colors.

I'm doing good so far with only using paper from my scrap pile and not cutting into new sheets. I'm getting a lot of ideas just by sorting through my scraps. I keep my scraps in hanging file folders by color, so that makes it easier when I go to make a card. Once I choose my colors, I can just pull out that folder and see what I have.

Well, I'm going to leave it at that for tonight. I'm not feeling too well, have had a headache, so I'm going to go give Paul the haircut that I promised him I would give him before his work-related Golf Play Day tomorrow morning, and then I think I'm going to call it a night.

Thursday's Animal

Thursday's Animal...that reminds me of the nursery rhyme Monday's Child. You've heard that right?
Monday's child is fair of face.
Tuesday's child is full of grace.

Wednesday's child is full of woe.

Thursday's child has far to go.

Friday's child is loving and giving.
Saturday's child works hard for a living.
But the child who is born on the Sabbath Day
Is bonny and blithe and good and gay.

I always hated that because I was born on a Thursday...it's like someone saying, "You have a loooong way to go, kid." I wanted to be born on a Tuesday. I wanted to be full of grace. However, I was always grateful for the fact that I wasn't born on a Wednesday!

Check this out, though...tonight I came across what is apparently the original 1887 version.
Monday's child is fair of face.
Tuesday's child is full of grace.
Wednesday's child is loving and giving.
Thursday's child works hard for a living,
Friday's child is full of woe.
Saturday's child has far to go.
But the child that is born on Sabbath Day
Is bonny and happy and wise and gay.
I like that one better. She works hard for her money...so hard for it honey...
I would still rather have been born on a Tuesday.

Okay...enough of that...on to card #4 of A Dragonfly Garden's Animal Challenge... Thursday's Animal...Mr. Turtle!

I bet he has far to go...and a will take a looong time to get there.

I was in a hurry to put this one together tonight, so I used Sketch Challenge 137 on SCS. I was running short on time because I had to watch the two-hour season finale of So You Think You Can Dance. Which, by the way... Yaaaay to the winner (name to be added later 'cause I don't want to give it away!) If you didn't watch it this season, all I can say is you missed some AMAZING dancing. They did everything from hip-hop to contemporary to jazz to Broadway to ballroom! Amazing, amazing talent. They make it look so easy. I get tired just watching.

Speaking of tired...I hear my bubble bath calling my name. I'm going to soak and peruse this month's issue of Paper Crafts magazine that came today. Calgon take me away!

PS Oh, one more thing. If you curious to know what day you were born on, here is a good place to start... Time Capsule

Day #3

Here's my card for day #3 of Gail's "Animal Week" over at A Dragonfly Garden!

Details:
Stamp: Penny Black "I'm Good Boy" (good girl in my case! Is that a girly dog or what?)
Cardstock: SU! Close to Cocoa. I'm not sure where the pink came from.
Printed: Provo Craft (I think...keep in mind this is all from my scrap pile!)

Can you tell from the last couple of cards I've made that I got myself a new toy! Yep...I got a Cuttlebug! I'm so excited!! (and I just can't hide it!)

Isn't it beeeauuutiful! I love it, love it, love it! I only have three of the embossing folders, but there are so many more I want to get. Lucky for me their pretty inexpensive! I think embossing gives the cards such a dressed up look.

Tuesday's Animal Challenge

Here is my second card for Gail's "Animal Week" challenge over at A Dragonfly Garden. I used this sweet little guy again because I had some already-stamped images sitting around! I just have to get me more of these hedgehog stamps by Penny Black.

Not only am I following along with Gail's challenge, but I'm challenging myself to only use papers from my rapidly growing pile of scraps. I will not cut into a new piece of paper for any card I make for this challenge. My scrap pile is taking over, and I really need to get it under control! These colors are kind of unconventional, but I liked them together on the tiny remaining strip I had of this Basic Gray striped paper. I left this kind of simple too because I'm super tired tonight! I've been crazy busy at work, and it has taken a lot out of me.

Anyway...it's waaaay past my bedtime, so off I go. I'll be back tomorrow with another animal!

I'm Up For The Challenge

Gail over at A Dragonfly Garden has decided to make this week "Animal Week" and is posting an animal card daily, and she has challenged her blogging buddies to make something animal-themed. Like this is hard for me. Me make something with animals? Do I ever do anything but? Well, dear Gail...I'm up for the challenge. Not only will I make something animal-themed, but I too will post one every day this week! My regular readers are now saying to themselves, "Yeah, right...like you're going to post every day."

All I can say to that is, "Watch me!"

So...I may be a day late (and definitely a dollar short), but there is no time like the present.

Now...lets go back in time for a minute, and pretend it's Monday (gasp!). This is the image I was originally going to use for one of the swaps, but then I discovered it is waaaay to much coloring to make 8 of them. This stamp has a lot going on, so I left the card real simple and only added a mat and a fish button. This particular stamp is from Eureka Stamps. Isn't he a cutie? The inside says, "Just thought I'd drop you a line."

Monica Needs...

Have you seen the "needs" game? In the Google search box, type in your name followed by the word "needs" and see what it is that you need! Funny! I'm supposed to post the top 10 things that I need, but I just went through and picked some of the good ones.
  1. Monica needs a job. not yet anyway
  2. Monica needs another dress washed. I need more than that...as evidenced by the pile of laundry waiting for me downstairs
  3. Monica needs to dye her hair a darker shade. Those grays are starting to peek through again.
  4. Monica needs a nap. Amen
  5. Monica needs to move in a new direction—one that results in a solution. Amen to that one too!
  6. Monica needs a complete image overhaul. I guess I can start by dying my hair a darker shade.
  7. Monica needs to come off her high-horse with this one. I beg your pardon
  8. Monica) needs to shape up. Uh-oh
  9. Monica needs an ANTIPSYCHOTIC. Probably
  10. Monica Needs Prayer Today!!! One can never have too many prayers
Ugh! I have so much to do that I'm completely overwhelmed. You know how that is where you have so much to do that you don't even know where to begin so you just kind of sit there and not do anything? Am I the only one that ever feels that way? The house is a mess! You know what I need...I need those people from Mission Organization or Clean Sweep to come in and help me! Seriously. My coworkers think I'm so organized because my desk at work is neat and tidy and my drawers all organized.

If they could see any other part of my house than what I let them see, they wouldn't believe it.

My dream is a clean and organized home with everything having a place. I read about it. I watch these shows. I read organizing blogs...articles in Woman's Day and Family Circle. I've read all about it. I could probably write my own book. If I spent even half the time actually trying to get things organized as I spend reading about how others organize, I might actually get on the right track.

But no...not me. I sit here and pretend like I have nothing to do.

Jill might be bringing Marco over tomorrow for a play date with Abby, so I have to do something! I have to at least get the poop picked up out of the backyard!! Did I ever show you a picture of Marco?

Look at that face! I can't wait to meet him!

Okay...that's it...I'm going downstairs and getting to it. I'm going to get my butt out of this computer chair! Here I go...

Huh?

No! I am not going to take a nap! I refuse! I'm going downstairs to clean! Right now!!

Really.

Pure Laziness

About a month ago, I joined some swaps (okay, actually four swaps), and the images that I had in mind when I signed up required a lot of coloring. You all know my favorite technique is the Gamsol Magic technique (Prismacolor Pencils with the odorless mineral spirits). Well, one swap in particular was to use a House Mouse image. I only had one of these...the one with the little mouse lying there all content with his tummy all full of strawberries. The swap is for six cards. I stamped all my images and then sat down to color. The first one came out great! By the time I was halfway through the second one, though, I was beginning to regret that I even signed up in the first place. I thought there is no way I'm coloring six of these images! My hand hurts already! So what did I do? I printed out the "40% off one item" coupon for Hobby Lobby and went and bought myself another House Mouse stamp...one that is A LOT easier to color. Am I lazy or what?! Here is what I bought and one of the swap cards...this one water-colored instead of using the colored pencils.

Cute huh? Is that not the sweetest image? You know what's funny? The mouse is named Monica...says so right on the stamp! The bird makes me think of the parakeet I had when I was young...Blueboy. I called him Booba for short. He was the sweetest bird. I remember when mom brought him home. She brought home him and a female and told me to choose which one I wanted. I stuck my hand in the female's cage, and the first thing she did was bite me. Not a good first impression. I think I'll pass on her. Which it's a good thing because she (Juliette is what I named her) ended up dying a few days later (Hey Sheila...remember that??). My best friend and I were probably about 12 at the time. We walked into our kitchen and she was seeing the birds for the first time. She said, "Why is that one lying on the bottom of the cage?" Um...I think it's dead. Poor Juliette. I'm glad I didn't choose her. Her biting me must have been meant to be! I'm happy to report that Blueboy lived to a ripe old age...whatever that is for birds. Boy do I have stories about that bird, though! One time he was sick and the only way I could get him to eat was if I placed one seed at a time on the back of my hand and put my hand in the cage. I'll never forget that...or the time he somehow got his beak stuck on the hook on the top of his cage!

Anyway, enough of that trip down memory lane. Next is the card I made from the original image that I was planning to use for this swap and that first image that I colored. Yeah, I agree...I like this one better too. There is just something about those red strawberries! There is just no way I could have colored all six that I needed for the swap! I've been soooo busy at work, and my wrists are barely holding out as it is. I am going to have to color a few more here and there, though, because I really do like this card!

I'm not going to do any details for these two this time 'cause I'm just way too tired. If you want to know about the supplies, just leave me a comment, and I'll do my best to answer.

Have a great Friday, everyone!

PS On a side note, I just want to say that my heart goes out to those affected by the bridge collapse in Minneapolis. What a terrible tragedy. That just goes to show that you never know what is going to happen from one moment to the next...so cherish every one.
